Divine medicine for Swine Flu.

The swine flu scare has gripped the entire nation, and the people in Junagadh, too seem highly ‘concerned’ about it.

People are coming up with various kinds of ideas, from preventive measures to medication to other ways of fighting the virus. In one such concerned move on Saturday, students of the College of Agriculture Engineering and Technology organized a yagna on the Junagadh Agricultural University campus.

They offered aahuti invoking the ‘God of Fire’ to incinerate the swine flu virus to ashes! Some passers-by, who although didn’t seem interested in offering prayers to Agnidev, did wish that the students succeeded in their attempt.

They believe that the idea was not bad if the deadly virus could be controlled this way.

After hogging limelight for acquiring the earth’s fastest animal, Cheetah, from Singapore, officials at the Sakkar Baug Zoo in Junagadh have now got down to do more serious job of courtship between the two African pairs.

The zoo officials know it’s not an easy task given the fact that the male cheetahs, who live in groups, usually attack the females, which are solitary in nature and seldom show any reproductive behavior.

“Breeding cheetah is very challenging. But we will make this happen.

We will soon visit De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust is South Africa to get the training in breeding of the endangered species.

De Wildt has achieved remarkable success in increasing the population of the spotted big cat,” said V J Rana, director Sakkar Baug Zoo.

Breeding among predators have been made possible by the De Wildt after several experiments, which ended up in constructing a “lovers’ lane” along the female enclosures to allow easy access to the males, he said.

European experts undertake Girnar Ropeway Survey.

Promoters of ‘Udan Khatola', the ambitious rope way project of Girnar, have begun a pre-project survey of the mountains.

The decades-old project, which has yet to see the light of day, has shown some signs of a headway with this survey.

"Girnar ropeway project has finally been revived," said Dipak Kapilesh, western regional head of Usha Breco, promoter of the company. "A nine-member team has started a six-day survey from April 2. The team consists of experts from Doppelmayr, a leading Austrian ropeway company with which we've collaborated. The company has major market share and has laid 150 ropeways in Europe last year," he said.

"We want to make Girnar ropeway project of international standard.

"So far, the survey has covered upper and lower stations. On Saturday, we undertook ropeway's central line survey and design work," Kapilesh said. "Till the final clearance, we will not be allowed to touch the grounds. So till then, we are completing the initial survey and design work," he said.

Planned in 1968, the project has been delayed for various reasons since its foundation stone was laid by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in May 2007. But, after Girnar forest covering around 180 sq km and including Mount Girnar was declared wildlife sanctuary on May 31, 2008, the project went for approval to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest.

Recently, Usha Breco Ltd was asked to identify alternate routes as the land it has got is located in Girnar wildlife sanctuary.

Asked about the clearance, Kapilesh said, "We will obtain environment clearance certificate from the ministry by June-July, and then we will start the project work," he added."We have submitted detailed report and environmental assessment reports to GPCB and expect to get a clearance. As for the alternate route, we have suggested the best possible route to the ministry that will cause minimal damage to the environment," he said.

Harsutaben Dave - Junagadh City Pride

Indian-American community members on June 21, joined in the rare and joyous occasion of celebrating the 100th birthday of Harsutaben Hemubhai Dave.

Her family, including four sons and three daughters most of who live in Southern California with their families hosted a celebratory party at the unjab Palace Restaurant, here.

The over 125 invitees who attended were treated to songs by the vivacious ‘birthday girl’ and a speech where she thanked all for her blessings.

Harsutaben Dave was born one hundred years ago in a little hamlet near Bilkha village of Junagadh District in Gujarat.

At 17, she was married to Hemubhai Dave of Bhavnagar. Two years later, with her husband who was a well known jeweler, she relocated to Burma. But in 1935, returned to India, due to the gathering of war clouds.

In December 1968, the family moved to the United States. Unfortunately her husband passed away just a year later. Today, her family are all well settled and doing well in Southern California. Only her eldest daughter lives in Mumbai.

The energetic Harsutaben pursued her creative interests and in 1997 published a book of poems.

Currently, she lives in Arleta in the San Fernando Valley area.

A great Film Star from Junagadh, Born 59 years ago in Junagadh, Gujarat, and Parveen Babi was a special child.

The only child of her parents, born to them 14 years after their marriage. Her father Vali Mohammed Babi, used to be an administrator with the Nawab of Junagadh. This pretty college girl caught the eye of filmmaker B R Ishara while studying at St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad. He gave her first break in Charitra (1973) opposite cricketer-turned-actor Salim Durrani. Though the film flopped, Parveen had registered her presence. She landed Majboor opposite Amitabh Bachchan on the strength of it.

Parveen changed the cinematic syntax of the holier-than-thou Indian heroine. Smoking, clubbing, donning western costumes, she lent glamour to all her roles. She broke several social convetions and tabboos. She was the first Indian heroine to be featured on the cover of TIME magazine for her beauty, charm and success.

She was often considered to be Zeenat Aman’s rival owing to their sex-symbol tag. In fact, she acted alongside Aman in Ashanti (1982) and Mahaan (1983).

Even in hero-centric films like Deewar (1975), Shaan (1980) and Namak Halaal (1982), she made her presence felt with her serene aloofness. She even stole the thunder from her co-star Hema Malini in Manoj Kumar’s Kranti(1981). Parveen also starred in offbeat films like Vinod Pandey’s Yeh Nazdeekiyan(1982) and Hrishikesh Mukherji’s Rang Birangi(1983).

Her success ran into heavy weather in the mid-'80s following her mental illness. She left the film industry to move to New York where she became associated with the spiritual guru U. G. Krishnamurti. She returned to Mumbai in 1992 when she was unrecognizable as she had put on lots of kilos. She tried to switch over to interior designing without any success.

She died a recluse in her Juhu penthouse apartment after her housing society secretary complained to the police that she had not collected milk and newspapers from her doorstep for two days.

Parveen rests in peace buried next to her mother at Santa Cruz , Mumbai. But whenever the strains of Raat baaqi and Jawaan jaaneman are played in discotheques, the ethereal image of a gyrating Parveen rises before your eyes.

Narendra Modisir to visit Junagadh on Maha Shivaratri

Junagadh Girnar Taleti Bhavnath Temple:-

Narendra Modisir will become the first Gujarat chief minister to take part in the annual Maha Shivaratri fair held here at the Bhavnath Mahadev Temple at the foothills of Mount Girnar.

In Junagadh,This is most wonderful events at Shivaratri.

The five-day festival of Bhavnath began March 1 with the ‘dvaja’ ceremony (flag hoisting) atop the temple, situated seven kilometres from the city.

The “maha puja” of Lord Shiva takes place at midnight at the temple on the 14th day of the dark half of the month.

On Maha Shivaratri night, sadhus from different parts of the country move towards the fair holding flags and tridents and blowing conch shells.

A palanquin carrying a decorated idol of Lord Dattatreya precedes them. Once the procession ends, the Nagas take a dip at the Mrigi kund in the temple premises.

The Bhavnath Mahadev Temple is surrounded by many equally ancient and holy places, all of which snugly rest at the foothills of Girnar. Maha Shivaratri is one of the important annual fairs of Gujarat.
