Junagadh News – Cotton Quality may damaged by Rain after Diwali

Ginners are worried lot because of heavy rain that lashed parts of Saurashtra region appears to have caused considerable damage to the cotton growers as the rainfall will have adverse impact on the quality of the cotton.

Unseasonal rainfall will play spoilsport for the crops, especially cotton.

As per Latest Bharat Wala who is president of Saurashtra Ginners Association that represents 540 ginning units in the region, said that, “The rainfall will have reverse impact on quality of cotton production. We are getting reports of impact of rainfall on cotton from various parts of the region. As of now, we can't say exactly but I am afraid the quality will suffer a lot after this rain," said Wala. He said the region produces 70 per cent of total cotton in the state and that is why the rain was causing worry to farmers and ginners in the region. "It is expected that 1.30 lakh bales of cotton will be produced in the state in this season”

Rainfall was reported in Bhavnagar District, Amreli District and Junagadh Districts. According to district flood control room officials, in Amreli district, Savarkundla received 56 mm rainfall, Khambha received 55 mm, Dhari received 41 mm, Jafrabad received 45 mm, Amreli 25 mm, Liliya 24 mm and Babra received 11 mm rainfall. Apart from Amreli district, parts of Junagadh district, mostly coastal areas, received significant rainfall. Officials said that Una received 44 mm rainfall, Talala (19 mm) Kodinar (57 mm), Keshod (13 mm), (15 mm) and MangrolSutrapada received 14 mm rainfall.

Moderate to heavy rain forecast in Junagadh.

Moderate to heavy rain has been forecast across Junagadh following a depression in the Arabian Sea off Veraval coast, to the extent that the danger signal no 3 has been sounded at the Veraval Port.

Fishermen have also been warned against venturing out into the sea.

B A Jethva, Port Supervisor, Veraval, said: “The depression in the Arabian Sea is located 10 degree north latitude and 71.5 degree east longitude. It might get converted into a deep depression followed by cyclone. Alert has been sounded and Signal no 3 have been hoisted at the Veraval Port.”

Since the last 24 hours ending Tuesday, rainfall has been reported in eight talukas in Junagadh district. According to the district flood control room, maximum 55 mm rainfall has been reported in Maliya town, followed by Keshod, 23 mm; Talala and Una 21 mm; Bhesan 15 mm; Visavadar 12mm; Junagadh 11 mm; and Manawadar 2 mm.

But the three talukas of Veraval, Mangrol and Mendarada are yet to receive rain.

With the beginning of rainfall, power supply was disrupted in Junagadh city for three hours on Monday evening.

Besides in Bhesan, rain accompanied by wind was reported and power supply was disrupted in some 117 villages. Power supply was, however, restored later, officials said.

Three incidents of lightning were reported at Najapur, Koyalana and Bhalgam village in Junagadh district. No casualty has been reported so far, but two domestic animals were reportedly killed in lightning strikes.

Rain hits Saurastra region, road traffic in Junagadh affected.

Rajkot/Ahmadabad (PTI) Road traffic in Junagadh district have been affected following an incessant rain in Saurastra region during the last 24 hours.

The road traffic of Veraval-Talala, Una-Dolasa and Gadu-Chorwad in Junagadh district have been affected and local authorities were busy clearing the road, said Junagadh district collector Ashwini Kumar.

The roads were blocked following rain with heavy wind that uprooted many trees in the district, officials said.

Sutrapada (175 mm), Veraval (149 mm) and Mangrol (145 mm) talukas in Junagadh received highest rainfall in the last 24 hours, officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Kodinar also recorded 90 mm rainfall they added. Low lying areas in Junagadh were inundated with water and people have been warned to be careful, Mr. Kumar said adding the situation is under control and there was no need to evacuate the people living in low lying areas.

Jamnagar district also received considerable amount of rain owing to the depression in the Arabian Sea.

Kalyanpur taluka recorded 67 mm rainfall, while Jamnagar and Bhanvad received 48 mm, and Khambhalia got 45 mm rainfall.

Incessant rainfall in Junagadh district in the last 48 hours has disrupted normal life. On Wednesday, the first casualties were reported with the district officials declaring two persons missing, who are feared dead.

The water levels in all the dams have been augmented following moderate to heavy rains in the catchment areas. The sluice gates of Aambajal and Vrijmi dams have been opened to maintain the rule level, according to Flood Control Room officials.

By Tuesday evening, Mangarol, Malia, Veraval and Talala towns in Junagadh district witnessed heavy rainfall.

According to district flood control figures, Mangrol has received 305 mm rainfall followed by Malia with 285 mm, Veraval with 234 mm, Talala with 205 mm, Junagadh with 190 mm, Visavadar with 164 mm, Kodinar and Sutrapada with 155 mm each, Vanthali with 120 mm, Manawadar with 105 mm, Keshod with 102 mm, Bhesan with 100 mm, Mendarada with 55 mm and Una with 41 mm.

Heavy rains in Mangarol and Veraval has resulted in water logging in many parts of the cities.
